Puma Cats - Hunt Behavior
Puma Cats hunt alone, by day or night and will cache its food, if large enough, in dense undergrowth returning to it over several days. The Puma Cat is big enough to tackle larger prey such as domestic cattle and horses as well as wild deer, sheep, rodents, rabbits, hare and beaver. In hunting, the puma uses the strength of its powerful hind legs to lunge at its prey with single running jumps that can reach in excess of 40 feet.
Puma Cats - Endangered
The number of these cats was greatly reduced by hunting and trapping. Actually Pumas are not endangered. However, there is one sub-type that is called the Florida Panther (P.c.coryi) that can be found only in and around the state of Florida. There are only 50 of these cats remaining in the wild today. The population of these animals was reduced greatly in the beginning of this century.
Puma Cats - Reasons of Human Aggression
The killing of livestock is one of the principal reasons for human hostility towards these cats. Puma Cats take not only prey on calves, pigs, sheep, goats and full grown cattle, but they are especially fond of horses and burros.
Puma Cats - Threats
Since the time when the settlers came to America, Puma Cats have been relentlessly persecuted. They have been killed for predation on livestock. Moreover, these animals were killed because of their luxurious coat.
Among other threats to these animals are: hunting Puma Cats for sport, mercury poisoning, cars, and a lack of genetic diversity. Rescue organizations undertake different attempts to work out breeding plans that take Puma Cats from nearby populations and release them into the wild hoping to create a stable population.
